Told through circus and song, Vasilissa is an immersive open air adventure presented by four highly skilled Sylph Circus performers and Sirin Ensemble, a choir of six powerful female voices. This retelling of the traditional Russian folk tale leads audiences through a secret Maleny forest following the adventures of Vasilissa, a young teen tricked by her peers into asking the bag lady witch of the woods for fire.
Vasilissa is a coming of age story for girls traditionally told to fortify them on their journey to womanhood. Young women and girls are invited to participate in an artist and counsellor lead discussion at 11:30am on the Sunday, to jointly unpack the tale and uncover tools to help nurutre a healthy mind.
Join us for a magical nest making workshop for all ages at 11:30am on the Saturday and weave your dreams for the new year into your own tiny nurturing handmade nest. This session is led by artists who created the giant nest and bower that feature as part of the forest performance.
Vasilissa is directed by Cindy Darabi (Director Sylph Circus) with musical director Stephanie Arlidge (Choir Master, Sirin Ensemble).
Vasilissa will be featured as part of the Anywhere Festival in Mat 2021. https://anywhere.is/about-us/
Beyond
Currently a work in progress, Beyond is a physical theatre and circus collaboration between Sylph Circus and Sunshine Troupe, an ensemble of high functioning intellectually disabled adults. The performance poses the question, what would we do if we could go beyond our fears? The developmental process of collaboration for this work is being filmed for documentary by Aesop Media.
